A rowhouse has only two walls to vent through
An Old Town rowhouse shares both side walls with its neighbors. That leaves the front and the back — and the front usually faces a historic streetscape where a new vent penetration isn't welcome or, in the Old Town and Parker-Gray districts, may need Board of Architectural Review approval. So the vent runs the length of the house to the rear wall, or straight up to the roof. Both are long runs, and roof terminations have a specific failure mode: lint that doesn't quite make it out settles back down the vertical run and packs at the base.
Rowhouse laundry is also usually in a closet in the middle of the floor plan, so the run starts with two or three elbows before it even leaves the closet. Add the horizontal distance and most of these lines are past the 35-foot code limit once the elbows are counted. Cleaning helps; a re-route to the nearest exterior wall, where one is possible, helps permanently.
Away from Old Town, the pattern changes. Del Ray and Rosemont bungalows put the dryer in a basement or a back-corner mudroom with a short, sane run — the issue there is age and a damp basement, where moist air plus lint cakes the inside of the duct into something a brush has to work at. The West End's garden apartments and condos around Landmark and Van Dorn have short runs but forty-year-old exterior hoods with dampers rusted open.

What the code actually requires
The International Residential Code (M1502), which Virginia follows, sets rules most homeowners have never seen. A dryer vent has to be four-inch smooth-wall rigid metal, and its total developed length can't exceed 35 feet — with five feet subtracted for every 90-degree elbow and two and a half feet for every 45. It has to terminate outdoors, never into an attic, crawlspace, soffit, or garage. The termination needs a backdraft damper and no screen, because a screen catches lint. Flexible foil or plastic duct is not permitted inside walls or ceilings at all. A large share of the vents we open in Northern Virginia fail at least one of these, usually because the laundry was moved during a renovation and the vent was extended with whatever was on the truck.
