In a 5,000-square-foot McLean house, the laundry room sits near the bedrooms — the middle of the second floor, far from any exterior wall. The vent has to travel horizontally through joist bays and then usually up and out the roof. Thirty to forty feet of developed length with four or five elbows is routine here, and the code limit is 35 feet before elbow deductions. It has to terminate outdoors, never into an attic, crawlspace, soffit, or garage. The termination needs a backdraft damper and no screen, because a screen catches lint. Flexible foil or plastic duct is not permitted inside walls or ceilings at all.
