Crawlspace runs and soffit terminations
In an original Vienna rambler, the dryer sits on a slab or over a crawlspace, and the vent drops into the crawl and travels to a rim-joist termination. Crawlspaces are humid, and a metal duct running through humid air condenses on the inside — lint sticks to a wet duct wall and packs into a dense layer instead of blowing through. We also find crawlspace runs that were never fully connected, or that came apart at a joint years ago and have been discharging into the crawl ever since, which is a moisture problem for the whole house.
Vienna's new construction has the opposite setup and its own bad habit: laundry on the second floor and a vent terminated into the soffit. Soffit venting looks tidy and passes a casual glance, but warm, wet exhaust released under the eave gets pulled straight back into the attic through the soffit intake vents. The lint stains the underside of the eave, and the moisture ends up in the attic insulation. It should terminate through a wall or the roof with a proper hood, and re-routing it is straightforward work we do regularly.
Between the two are Vienna's 1970s–80s colonials, most with the laundry on the main floor near the kitchen — reasonable runs, but forty years old, often with foil duct in the concealed section and an exterior hood whose damper stopped closing a long time ago.

What the code actually requires
The International Residential Code (M1502), which Virginia follows, sets rules most homeowners have never seen. A dryer vent has to be four-inch smooth-wall rigid metal, and its total developed length can't exceed 35 feet — with five feet subtracted for every 90-degree elbow and two and a half feet for every 45. It has to terminate outdoors, never into an attic, crawlspace, soffit, or garage. The termination needs a backdraft damper and no screen, because a screen catches lint. Flexible foil or plastic duct is not permitted inside walls or ceilings at all. A large share of the vents we open in Northern Virginia fail at least one of these, usually because the laundry was moved during a renovation and the vent was extended with whatever was on the truck.

If we clean the line, confirm strong flow at the termination, and the dryer still won't dry, the issue is the appliance — a failed heating element, thermal fuse, or blower — and that's a repair, not a cleaning.
