Rowhouse stacks, coal-era flues, and a historic district
Old Town's rowhouses are the oldest chimneys we work on in Northern Virginia. A single masonry stack on a party wall often carries several flues — one for each fireplace on each floor, sometimes for two different houses — and those flues are narrow, unlined, and occasionally cross into each other where the brick has failed. A camera inspection is the only way to know which flue actually goes where, and it's not unusual to find one fireplace venting into a neighbor's flue.
Many of these chimneys burned coal for decades before wood. Coal leaves a different deposit than wood creosote — sulfurous, corrosive, and hard on old mortar — so an Old Town or Parker-Gray flue that "hasn't been used in years" can still be in rough shape from what was burned a century ago. Del Ray and Rosemont bungalows from the 1910s–30s have smaller, simpler brick fireplaces, but the same aging clay tile or bare-brick flues.
The Old Town and Parker-Gray historic districts add a practical wrinkle: exterior changes visible from the street — including some chimney caps and crown work — may need Board of Architectural Review sign-off.
